God of War’s Christopher Judge Turned Down Role to Voice Younger Kratos Out of Respect for the Original Voice Actor

One massive shock that had fans divided when Santa Monica first announced the God of War reboot was that they were recasting the voice of Kratos. Terrence C. Carson, the previous actor, had provided Kratos’ iconic voice in eight games, that it was hard for many to see anyone else take the mantle. However, when God of War 2018 was released, players soon fell in love with the new voice provided by Christopher Judge, an actor many knew from the Stargate series. His work on Kratos, though somewhat familiar, provided a unique and fresh take on the character that even paid respect to Carson’s voice.

That was something Judge wanted to do very early on, as he recently discussed his version of the voice while speaking on Streamily, noting that he didn’t want to match Carson’s voice. He made sure not to listen to any of the previous God of War games when prepping for his take on the reboot. He was even offered another role elsewhere, where said project wanted him to use a voice similar to the younger version of Kratos, and even rejected that project.

“Even if they asked, I would’ve said no. I was actually offered something not too long ago, and I had to turn it down because they wanted me to somewhat match the voice of that character, and I said absolutely not.”

Spoiler alert for the God of War Ragnarok Valhalla DLC, but this may be why young Kratos is silent when confronted by the older version near the end of the DLC. That, or the studio just decided to keep him quiet. It would have been an incredible moment if they got Carson back to interact with Judge for that scene. It’s still a fantastic scene nonetheless.

Judge took to X/Twitter to say that no one at Santa Monica asked him to do a voice match of Carson and that it was another game.

Would you want to see Judge voice a young Kratos or would it sound odd at this point?

Thanks, PlayStation Lifestyle
