Gran Turismo Celebrates 25th Anniversary, Reports 90 Million Cumulative Sales

Gran Turismo

The Gran Turismo franchise just celebrated its 25th year anniversary, and Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi had a message for everyone involved in the Gran Turismo series.

In the message, it’s revealed that the series reached a cumulative sales total of 90 million over the course of its 25-year history. Yamauchi elaborates on this point:

Behind that 90 million figure, there are all the people of the media who conveyed the allure of Gran Turismo to their readers. There are the people of PlayStation who sold GT for us around the world with passion, and there is the incredible amount of support from the retailers who interfaced with our users.

To put things into perspective, the first Gran Turismo game was released on the original PlayStation last December 23, 1997. Since then, the franchise has released a total of eight mainline games and eight secondary titles.

The Gran Turismo series continues to be a pioneer in the sports and racing game genre, with GT7 recently releasing a Ferrari concept car made for the virtual world.

Gran Turismo 7 is out now on PS4 and PS5 consoles.
