Hogwarts Legacy Will Allow Players to Create Transgender Characters

Hogwarts Legacy Transgender Characters

Those looking forward to the Harry Potter universe game Hogwarts Legacy will be pleased to know that diversity will be taken into consideration, as Bloomberg reports that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. and developer Avalanche Studios are going to allow players to create transgender characters — giving options that are inclusive and representative of any individual.

According to the report, the customization features incorporated into the game will allow players to choose whether their character sounds masculine or feminine no matter what their body looks like. It’s not the first time it’s happened in an action role-playing game, but it’s certainly a big thing for a Harry Potter related property like this.

Although this level of customization has grown more common in video games and is no longer unusual, it’s noteworthy for Hogwarts Legacy. Last summer Rowling made several comments that were widely viewed as demeaning toward transgender people and denounced by many, including Harry Potter film stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. The comments also rattled some people working on the game, Bloomberg reported. As a result, some members of the Hogwarts Legacy development team have fought to make the game as inclusive as possible, pushing for the character customization and even for a transgender character to be added. There was resistance from management at first, the people familiar with the project said, but currently the character customization is included in the game. A Warner Bros. spokesperson declined to comment.

While that is definitely some inclusivity to look forward to, it won’t come any time soon as Hogwarts Legacy has been delayed to some time in 2022.
