Krafton Acquires Tango Gameworks and Hi-Fi Rush IP
About three months ago, Microsoft’s Xbox division announced the closure of Tango Gameworks alongside other Bethesda-owned studios due to “reprioritization of titles and resources,” which was a bit baffling given how well Hi-Fi Rush, Tango’s original IP, was received.
Thankfully, all is not lost, as Krafton Inc., the company that owns PUBG, Striking Distance Studios (The Callisto Protocol) has announced it has acquired Tango Gameworks and the Hi-Fi Rush IP for an undisclosed amount.
In the press release sent out, it mentions that Krafton intends to collaborate with Xbox and ZeniMax to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity at Tango Gameworks, which should allow the studio to continue developing the Hi-Fi Rush IP and “explore future projects,” There will be no impact on the existing game catalog of The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush.
Tango Gameworks was founded back in 2010 by Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil) and was acquired by Bethesda parent company ZeniMax in October of the same year. In 2021, Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media which added Tango alongside other Bethesda studios to the Xbox family for an astronomical $7.5 billion.
Hi-Fi Rush was released in January of 2023, and was met with overwhelming positive praise, and even managed to attract over three million players during its first 12 months of release. This March, Microsoft released the game on the PS5, with a final patch rolled out in May. Our review of the game was very favorable, giving it a 9.5/10.
This is very good news for those hoping to see a Hi-Fi Rush sequel materialize. Not only that, but we should see more projects from Tango surface in the years to come.
