Max Payne and Alan Wake 2 Voice Actor, James McCaffrey, Has Passed Away at the Age of 65

The iconic voice behind Max Payne and, more recently, Alan Wake 2’s Alex Casey and Thomas Zane, James McCaffrey, has died after his battle with cancer.

The heartbreaking news comes from TMZ, in which a rep confirmed that McCaffrey died this past Sunday while being surrounded by friends and family.

.. “One of Dick Wolf’s proteges (“”Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film. Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.” a rep of McCaffrey told TMZ.

Remedy Entertainment issued the following statement in response to the tragic news.

We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey. His remarkable talent not only gave life to our characters but also left an enduring impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family in this time of loss.”

Sam Lake, one of Remedy’s head honchos and the face of Max Payne and Alex Casey, also shared some words about McCaffrey.

“I’m heartbroken to hear the sad news of James McCaffrey’s passing. We worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was a key part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. No one could do what he did better than him.

James was Max Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench and finally Alex Casey. I had the honor of sharing Max Payne’s role and Casey’s role with him. He was a joy to work with. I will cherish his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jim”

McCaffrey has a long acting career in films and TV shows, but for gamers, he will be most known for being the voice of Max Payne throughout the trilogy. His most recent work was in Alan Wake 2, voicing police detective Alex Casey and filmmaker Thomas Zane, two characters that have received much praise from fans and critics.

James McCaffrey was only 65 years old, losing his life to bone marrow cancer this past Sunday.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends close to McCaffrey.
