Original Wipeout PS1 Source Code Released Online

Wipeout PS1

Game preservationists Forest of Illusion, with help from someone named March42, have announced that they have released the original Wipeout PS1 source code online alongside its Windows port! The game is well-known for being one of the original PlayStation’s launch titles, and it has spawned several sequels over the years, with some even garnering critical acclaim.

Here’s the official announcement from Forest of Illusion over on Twitter:

Today we have released the source code to Wipeout by Psygnosis, a futuristic racing game set in 2052! It includes the source to both the original PSX game as well as it’s Windows port. Please note that it is currently unknown if these sources are fully buildable.

Please note: This source code should not serve any purpose beyond educational and preservation purposes. It is not an “official” release, so you can stop asking about licenses. Thank you.

Forest of Illusion also provided a link towards the source files for Wipeout PS1, alongside an official description:

The following is the source code to Wipeout by Psygnosis, a futuristic racing game set in 2052, which ended up as a launch title for the PlayStation in Europe! It includes the source to both the original PSX game as well as it’s Windows port. Please note that it is currently unknown if these sources are fully buildable.

Having the source code to older titles is always a boon towards game preservation, as it allows the existing community to keep track of it before it gets ultimately lost to time. However, discovering the source files is just one step of many, as rebuilding a fully functional game out of it is even harder than securing the actual source code itself.

As is noted by the preservationists, the release of the source is nothing more than for preservation and/or educational purposes, and we here at MP1st do not condone any acts of piracy.
