Report: Final Fantasy 16 Does Not Run on Unreal Engine or Luminous Engine

final fantasy 16 game engine

With Final Fantasy 16 boasting impressive graphics and a seamless transition between combat and cutscenes, a few fans have wondered what game engine Square Enix decided to use for the upcoming RPG title. And while we don’t know what the game engine is called exactly, we at least have confirmation on what it isn’t. Final Fantasy 16 apparently does not run on Unreal Engine or Luminous Engine.

The information was revealed in a recent preview by Skill Up, who asked Square Enix about FF16’s game engine. Here’s the full quote from the recent preview:

As an aside, I asked if this was running in the Luminous Engine, and Square said “no,” I asked if it was Unreal and they said “no.” I asked what it was, and they refused to say. So yeah, I guess that’s something they’ll talk about later.

Unreal Engine is often the go-to game engine for a lot of games these days, but quite a few game studios use their own in-house engines. Luminous Engine is an example of this, as it’s the proprietary engine of Luminous Productions, a game studio that recently merged with Square Enix. For reference, Luminous Engine was used on Final Fantasy 15, and on the recently released Forspoken.

While we don’t know what the exact game engine that Square Enix used for FF16 is, some fans have pointed out that it may be Crystal Tools, the engine used in another FF title, Final Fantasy 14. This is speculation, mind you, and when Square Enix reveals the engine running Final Fantasy 16, we’ll let our readers know.
