Returnal Door Bug - How to Make Sure It Doesn't Happen to You

Running into random issues where you can’t open any doors or interact with any objects in Returnal? Well don’t worry as you are not alone, and the issue seems to be tied to those who own the pre-order suits. Here’s how you can avoid this nasty Returnal door bug.

For those not in the know, there appears to be a game progression breaking bug in Returnal that is associated when players where the pre-order suits. Housemarque has acknowledge this issues, along with a number of other known bugs, though at the time of writing there isn’t any fix available.

How to Avoid the Returnal Door Bug

As of right now, it seems that the best things that players can do to avoid this bug is simply by not changing suits, and sticking with the default one. For whatever reason these pre-order suits are causing issues where players can no longer open doors or interact with things on the map, halting any progress and causing players to restart.

While it is random, for us we noticed it would occur every time we skipped a cutscene. We did notice that once we stopped that the issue didn’t happen as much, though some random crashes were more common in our playthrough with the suits than without it. What are the pre-orders suits in Returnal?

For those who pre-ordered Returnal digitally, the following two suits were included as bonuses.

ASTRA Model 9 Prototype Suit
ASTRA Model 14 Tactical Suit

What if you didn’t pre-order, can you still unlock these suits in-game?

Sadly no, and according to Housemarque (via Discord) there are no plans to make them available after launch.

I have confirmation that the pre-order suits will NOT be available after launch. Also the codes are NOT in the physical copies, so to get the pre-order suits, you will HAVE to buy the game at pre-order. Sorry if this is disappointing to you. – Housemarque Tuomas Hakkarainen, aka Singens.

How do you Change Suits in Returnal?

The process of changing suits in Returnal is pretty easy. At the start of each new run, you will find yourself either inside or outside of a space ship called Helios. If you are outside, there is a whole in the middle of the ship that you can enter.

Once inside, you will then see a computer console, and to the right of this some locker storages. Interact with these lockers and you will be able to select which suit you want.
