Hopoo Games and Gearbox Publishing’s Risk of Rain Returns will add three alternate Survivor abilities to each of the original’s 12 Survivors. In a new Dev Thoughts video, Hopoo Games has shown off and explained one new alternate Ability per Survivor, with three additional Survivor slots (using placeholder dog images) potentially representing new Survivors.

Hopoo Games’s recently-announced Risk of Rain remake stays entirely loyal to the original title for the most part, but also seeks to freshen the experience. For additional replayability, Risk of Rain Returns will be decking out the original Survivor roster with new alternate abilities per Survivor. Each Survivor gets three alternate abilities that can be selected in place of the regular abilities before beginning a run. Hopoo goes over the function of one alternate ability per Survivor in the video, and is perhaps also teasing three new Survivors that currently have images of dogs assigned to their slots.

Risk of Rain Returns lands later in 2023 on Steam and Nintendo Switch, with both versions currently available for wishlisting. It seeks to enhance the look and feel of the original 2013 title with HD textures, new music from composer Chris Christodoulou, balance changes, and “revamped multiplayer.”
