Super Smash Bros. Creator Masahiro Sakurai Says He’s Working on a New Game
Masahiro Sakurai, one of the most respected and admired figures in the gaming world, has some exciting news for fans. The creator behind beloved titles like Super Smash Bros. and Kirby has revealed that he’s working on a new video game. While he didn’t share many details, Sakurai confirmed that the project is already in production and will be announced “sooner or later.”
In a recent YouTube video, part of his Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games series, Masahiro Sakurai discussed his new game during his farewell message. He stated, “I received a request to write a video game proposal, which I finished at lightning speed.” He continued, “I’m sorry I can’t share more about this project, but assuming we’re able to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later.”
While Sakurai hasn’t confirmed whether Nintendo is involved, his close ties with the company makes it likely that his new game could debut on the upcoming Switch 2. His long history with the Super Smash Bros. and Kirby series suggests that this new title could launch with Nintendo’s next console.
In the same video, Sakurai also discussed the journey of his YouTube channel, where more than 90 million yen ($600,000) was spent over the last two and a half years without any monetization. However, he admitted that the decision to spend such a large amount on the channel may not have been the best financial decision, but he viewed it as an investment in the future of gaming.
Sakurai’s main goal was to enhance the quality of games, hoping that his channel has helped bring “at least a little a bit of wind to the industry’s sails.”
