Tekken 8 Crossplay and Rollback Netcode Confirmed by Harada

Tekken 8 Roster

While Tekken 7 didn’t feature crossplay, fans will be glad to hear that Tekken 8 crossplay has just been confirmed by Tekken franchise boss Katsuhiro Harada along with rollback netcode too.

This was revealed by Harada over on Twitter where the Tekken 8 Game Director gamely answered fan questions. On the topic of Tekken 8 crossplay, Harada nonchalantly confirmed it alongside stating that he even proposed crossplay back when the PS4 and Xbox One generation as well.

Crossplay? Of course I will.
BTW
When the previous generation consoles were released, I had already proposed crossplay between the two platformers. However, at that time, they were at odds with each other over their mutual interests (and P2P security issue) & repeatedly refused.

In a separate tweet to a fan, Harada also confirmed that Tekken 8 rollback netcode is in as well! Furthermore, Harada explained why they didn’t make a big fuss in announcing both features.

already installed it, and it already has what you want. The reason WHY we don’t make big announcements like cross-play is Cuz even if we make big announcements, people like you will only say things like, “waaaa! That’s normal in this day and age.”

If you’re unfamiliar what rollback netcode is and why it’s a big deal, here’s a brief explanation (via IGN), “To put it simply, rollback netcode helps make online fighting game matches as smooth as possible, regardless of each competing player’s internet connection, making it just as seamless as it would be if the players were playing on the same machine.” You can also watch this video explaining it in-depth and why it’s important for the fighting game community.

While Harada’s response was a bit snarky, he does have a point. If they made a big deal announcing it, people would just chew over it and state how it should be expected and whatnot. At least this way, fans got what they want and Harada doesn’t need to hear any of the backlash surrounding the features’ inclusion.

Tekken 8 is set to launch on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, though there’s no release date revealed just yet.
