Developers Andrés Borghi and Tobías Rusjan debuted their upcoming horror game, “Tenebris Somnia” at Feardemic’s Fear Fest 2023. It stood out amongst the other reveals because of its unique approach to the horror genre. It adds a unique twist by combining 8-bit visuals and gameplay with live-action cutscenes.

The developers drew inspiration from the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but with the added twist of 2D environments and live-action cinematics in-between. These cinematics are not an afterthought though as developers put a lot of effort into them, and used real actors and professional film crew.

The gameplay will take place in an 8-bit environment where the players will solve puzzles, and try to survive the horrors that await them. Live-action cutscenes will be used to further the story in between the gameplay segments.

The overall gameplay loop will be like most games these days where you play a certain part and then there’s a cutscene with new story bits. However, with Tenebris Somnia, developers have combined two different genres to deliver a unique horror experience.

If all of this sounds intriguing, head over to Steam right now and try out the demo for yourself. The best part is that the system requirements aren’t demanding, so almost everyone can give it a shot.
