EZQuest USB-C HUB Review – The Perfect Travel HUB for Laptops and PCs

Finally, an easy solution to portability and connecting all your USB-C devices, including a monitor, without needing a massive HUB. We’re talking about the EZQuest USB-C Slim Gen 2 HUB Adaptor, and we’ve been testing it out the past few weeks across an array of systems, including our gaming consoles, and have found it to be the perfect solution to expanding your USB-C ports while keeping a clean work and play area.

Sleek Design That’s Easy to Travel With, and Allows More Room

From a design perspective, the EZQuest HUB is kept pretty simple. It features a sleek and thin metal casing with 6 USB-C ports built into it and an additional one off to the side that is strictly for powering the HUB. The dimensions are 4.64 x 1.32 x 0.39 inches, and the HUB weighs next to nothing, clocking in at a measly 85 grams. This makes it perfect for everyday travelers who want to take a multiport HUB without any bulk or insanely large and expensive Thunderbolt hubs. Granted, while it does support 10 Gbps speeds to each of the four USB-C ports (other two are for display and power pass), it is shared between them, meaning you can’t push those speeds simultaneously across multiple devices, though that’s understandable considering it’s still being fed from a device via a single port. It still beats carrying around an additional power source and a large bulky HUB for just a fraction of the cost (MSRP $79.99). Unless you are doing massive heavy work, such as rendering and transferring a bunch of data from one drive to another, and need that speed, you will likely never need that much transfer speed with this device.

One feature I used a lot was the USB-C display out port, which can display at 4K 60 Hz. Connecting a phone and a laptop to a monitor without needing an HDMI cable (supported USB-C displays) was pretty nice and easy. There’s also a dedicated 80 watts USB-C port that can easily charge a USB-C powered laptop.

What I’m fond of with the design is how small and thin it is. I’ve mentioned before that it’s easy to carry around wherever you go, but the HUB can easily fit underneath a low-profile television or monitor for those who stick with at-home work. No need to tuck it behind something because of the lack of desk space. On a desktop PC, the 10 Gbps USB-C ports are typically on the motherboard, outputting behind most setups.  I have my setup pretty clean in terms of cable management, but even so, going behind it and having to turn the whole PC around sometimes to get access to one of those ports can be an annoying hassle. Once you add more USB-C-powered devices, you eventually hit the point where you need more. EZQuest solves that in a much simpler manner.

For those console gamers who put their consoles in an out-of-reach spot, like behind your TV or inside an entertainment system, you could essentially extend those ports with this HUB while also locating them to a better spot. For my PS5, I have a standing behind my TV in my desk setup. The ports are really hard to get to with this setup, but the EZQuest now lets me set those ports in a more accessible spot. This has allowed me to connect a USB-C to charge my controller or use wired mode while charging other devices, such as a headset.

Fantastic and Speedy Performance

What was most impressive, though, was how great the EZQuest USB-C performed in actual transfer speeds. I do a lot of video editing, which is recorded, rendered, and stored on multiple SSDs. Being able to connect and fill all four USB-C ports with a dedicated SSD and transfer files seamlessly between them without disconnecting one to plug in another because of the limited ports on the PC was such a game charger. Even more so when I took all that on the go with my laptop, granted that, again, the transfer rates were shared between all the devices, but even so, with four drives running at the same time, it only took a few minutes to get files in the sizes of 10s and 20s GB to transfer.

Not to mention, by using this on a laptop, you can also expand your storage space without needing to upgrade the internal one, which, in some cases, is soldered on, like in newer Mac Books. You can turn that 256GB Mac into a terabyte of storage, which still comes out cheaper than making the initial decision to buy a higher-storage Mac. Sure, it’s more devices to hold on to, but as mentioned before, cable management isn’t much of an issue with the EZQuest, outside of its short USB-C cable it comes with, which I recommend replacing ASAP with a longer one.

Verdict

There’s not a whole lot to hate about the EZQuest USB-C HUB because, honestly, it does everything it advertises: It acts as a USB-C HUB that offers fast USB-C ports with easy accessibility and expandability. It works great on a desktop, Windows PC, Mac, and even, surprisingly, on a console for those wanting better access to their ports. Being able to connect multiple SSDs, a gaming controller, and a display port and have them all function simultaneously is amazing, and for those who travel for work a lot, being able to carry this around in a tiny travel case or inside your laptop bag is such a massive convenience.  It is a little pricey, coming in at $79.99 USD, but compared to the alternatives being in the hundreds, not to mention massively bulky in some cases with their external power brick and such, this is just a no brainer worthwhile investment for the long run.

Score: 9/10

Pros

  • Sleek design that not only makes for easy travel but also great space management.
  • Lots of ports, power pass-through, and a dedicated display for 4K 60 Hz.
  • It performs very well; file transferring is fast, while low-wattage devices charge pretty well, too.

Cons

  • The provided USB-C cable is super short (roughly 1.6 inches). It doesn’t leave a lot for ideal cable management and I ended up replacing it with a much longer, similar spec cable.
