The Legend of Dragoon Gets a Surprise PS5 Patch That Fixes a Lot of Issues

Even though it’s a PlayStation classic, Sony seems keen on supporting The Legend of Dragoon on current-gen platforms, as a new patch for it has been released on PS5. Players can now download Legend of Dragoon update 1.000.004 (no PS4 version, we checked), an unannounced patch.
The Legend of Dragoon Gets a PS5 Patch Years After Release
While Sony hasn’t said anything about the patch’s contents, the community is here to the rescue! Two years ago, one fan compiled a list of known issues with the PS5 release of Legend of Dragoon, and today, these issues have been fixed (per another Reddit user’s confirmation).
Jittering blue lines around objects in the background. These have been present on at least 50% of the screens in the game so far for me. (I’m in the back half of disc 1)
- Weird garbled text after characters names (Hellena Warden8!&/)5agsi)
- Battle sound effects being crushed, only playing half the sound, or completely missing
- Battle Voice lines not playing at all. I haven’t heard lavitz say HARPOOOON this entire play through. There is a boss right before you get dragoon form for the first time who chants before he uses a spell, the audio of said chant is completely absent in said fight.
- The after battle level up jingle sounds like it was ran through a wood chipper when multiple people level up at once.
- Rose’s Magic attacks cause the game to completely crash. This one right here is mega sad. With the nature of the games design you are most likely going to use her magic mid boss fight and lose progress. I had someone in another post tell me about this one and I tested it myself to unfortunately find it was true.
The patch has resolved all these issues, which is good to see for an old game (even if some of the issues were never there in the original version).
The Legend of Dragoon was originally released over 20 years for the PS1 in 2000 (1999 in Japan), and soon became a cult favorite among RPG fans.
It was re-released digitally on February 21, 2023, for the PS4 and PS5 as part of the Classics Catalogue. This version isn’t just a simple port, as Sony slapped in new features such as up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters.
Hopefully, other PS1 classics that were re-released also get significant updates as well.
