Borderlands 2 – Gearbox President Addresses Issues Surrounding Increased Level Cap

By now, many of you guys have already reached the level cap of 50 on Borderlands 2 with various characters and are dying to get your favorite vault hunter to the new level cap, expected to arrive sometime during the first quarter of this year.

According to Gearbox’s president Randy Pitchford, implementing an increased level cap for Borderlands 2 may be a lot tougher then people think. This is due to various reason’s such as literally breaking the game, from impossible skill tree combinations and more. Speaking to Venturebeat, Randy explained the many challenges that come with increasing the level cap.

Randy admits that there are those players that are hesitant to continued the story as they wait for a level cap  - players who are “in this spot where you kind of want to wait until you have an opportunity to get the … . Experience drives toward leveling up. You want that to also be in the loop when you’re experiencing the new campaign content, so you’re holding off on the campaign content until you have that.”

“When it comes to skill tree combinations beyond level 50, Randy says that “Some of those things start to become game-breaking. This has actually created a huge problem for us. We designed the skills really well this time, but we did, for better or for worse, make a lot of the decisions with the knowledge that there will be no more skill points available to put into any trees after you reach level 50. We knew the impossible configurations. Some of the design exploits that. Some of the impossible configurations, if they were possible, would break the game. Sometimes very literally. ‘Oh, that’s gonna blow memory. Your Xbox will crash.’”

“So now we’re in a world where … . We, as customers and gamers ourselves, hear the fans. People want to level up more. It makes sense. We totally get it. We did it in Borderlands 1, so we have the precedent. And we’re gonna break our fucking game if we change the math. If we change it up, who knows what the balance will do? People don’t want to just level up. They also want the game to level up with them. If I’m level 55 and everybody else is level 50, it’s a walkover. I want to get level 55 gear if I’m level 55. I want to fight level 55 enemies. Then we have to make the whole game over again.”

“It becomes this really … ‘oh, shit, have we painted ourselves into a corner here?’ Yes, the Achievement indicates that some of us, somewhere, wrote that Achievement and anticipated it, just as many customers do, because of the last game. But we’re now in this world where we’re confronting the reality of what it means to do that work, and it’s terrifying and challenging. It’s easy to imagine, when we’re playing the game, “We could just change the number, and everything would be fine.” No, dude, there’s a lot … . This is the most fundamental thing about the game. It’s a big deal.”

Randy continues, “…we’re in the middle of it. There might be things that aren’t going to work the same way. We might have to radically change the game. We have to think, “What’s more important? Do you we maintain these skills, or do we let people level up? What if we have to change skills?” We shipped the game with this shield that was totally broken.”

When it comes to the expectation of increasing the level cap through DLC, Randy admits, ”I think that’s a fair expectation because we did offer a level cap increase in Borderlands 1 in line with the third DLC.”

If and when the proposed level cap increase arrives, what would you guys like to see be the new level cap for Borderlands 2? Let us know in the comment section below!

Make it 70. It might require more tweaks to the game than if it were, say, 55 or 60, but the more work would equal players playing your game more. Sounds like a fair trade to me. That is why the made the game after all.

Agreed, 70, Borderlands was 69 so why not 1 up and go to 70 for Borderlands 2

I would say increase the max level to 80 because then we would have to keep replaying and playing the game and make the game cycles longer. Also if you guys could add an option to replay story and side missions over and over but the only way to get to play it again would be by completing every story mission or every side mission . That way we have more variety with our backpack. And also increase the level cap to 80 in the 4th piece of dlc and increase backpack and bank space. Also for the 4th dlc make it the absolute best dlc you’ve ever imagined make it match up with TSAOGK, then that there would of made the only reason to buy the season pass because otherwise it would be a waste of money.

55 is enough for me that’s two skill trees and a lil’extra. the Raid bosses would still be hard with out mods or hacking

    • Joel Santana

Yeah for me level 55 is perfect and wouldn’t cause a lot of issues, since a few levels more the game will start to ‘break ‘ in terms of how much health raid bosses and regular mobs will have/how much damage they’ll be able to do.

As well as a lot of the regular mobs will most likely be able to one shot you frequently if the new level cap is to high since after level 47 ish, weapons receive a massive amount of boost in terms of their damage output.

”We shipped the game with this shield that was totally broken.” I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. Your talking about a game with no multiplayer(competive) whatsoever & this cancerous generation of gamers cried about. Don’t matter I have a Game Genie with all skills anyway.

    • DarthDiggler

How did you get the cartridge based Game Genie to work with your PC, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3?

Seriously though. How can they stand by this broken shield jargon when they have bosses that can one shot a fully leveled up character, and this drop rate that’s as bad or worse than your chances at winning the lottery. The Bee at least helped with farming. Nerfing a shield in a coop game though…I’ll never understand it.

i say 55 or 60 that would be the best in my opinion.

  • TheSwedishWiking

Change the skill three system. You get a skillpoint every 3-4(?) level intead of every one. Then that would be out of they way. And release something like the “true vault hunter mode” for level 55+ with bosses and guns increased by X% health and damage etc. and for the guns just do the same.

It sounds easy but I guess it isn’t. The community can come up with the ideas, Gearbox chose wich onces to use.

    • DarthDiggler

Yeah but not having new skills would kind of defeat the purpose of removing the level cap IMHO.

      • TheSwedishWiking

Some people like to level up and defeat bosses at a constant harder level.
But I agree with you I want new skills too.

  • MegaMan3k

To me, the solution almost seems obvious…

Introduce some sort of “Elite” tree with only a few options, and then allow the excess points to be used there. And stop stat growth with leveling.

    • DarthDiggler

Even better how about 1 more new additional power that would only be upgradable with post L50 skill points.

  • 1The_Public1

Increase the bloody bank and backpack size you A$$HOLE! 1.32 patch makes it impossible even with trainers and save game editors. Why the hell are you putting so much effort into keeping my backpack at 27??!!!!!!! Not buying any DLC until you cut this crap out. Leave it up to us how to enjoy the game.

    • Wocky45

      Fu**ING EXACTLY!!

  • SleepMode

I’m just gonna be honest here. A 5 to 10 level increase isn’t gonna do it for me. There’s so much content in the game (excluding DLC) that the level cap can be reached without even completing half of the second playthrough. A level cap of 70 or 80 does sound more reasonable. Unfortunately, it also sounds like doing it would destroy our consoles or make the game entirely unplayable. This is a tough one, guys. But you have put things into perspective for me. I wish you well.
