BF4 Servers Undergo Hardware Improvements to Fix Lag and “Rubber-Banding” Issues

Battlefield 4 developer DICE has noted a recent upgrade to the game’s server infrastructure in an effort to reduce or eliminate the considerable lag a number of users have been experiencing on servers with high player counts.

Lag – or “rubber-banding”, as the Battlefield community likes to call it – has gained significant notoriety since the launch of Battlefield 4′s Naval Strike DLC. Battlefield 4 community manager Dan Mitre has since issued a statement, noting that the team is “unhappy with [Battlefield 4's] server performance” and will “be upgrading the hardware as soon as possible, investing more to deliver a better experience.”

A planned maintenance over the course of last night aimed to implement these upgrades, despite not being detailed the most recent R32 Server Update changelog.

According to DICE developer who goes by the name “TheBikingViking” on Reddit, hardware improvements are in effect as of last night and players should, hopefully, be noticing a difference.

“Server hardware upgrades are technically not part of a software changelog. The server hardware upgrades would explain why the rubberbanding issues are reported as mostly gone,” he wrote in response to a posting on Reddit.

“As I understand it, yes, the hardware improvements have been done today. Would love to hear some feedback on it,” he wrote in another.

As a bit of a side note, it turns out that a client-side PC patch was, in fact, not planned to take place over night, as was initially reported. “There was never any client update planned for today, only a server update,” TheBikingViking wrote. “I don’t know where that information came from.” It should be noted that the original announcement came from server providers, and not DICE. Looks like we can chalk this one off as a case of misinformation.

Let us know in the comments, are you noticing any performance improvements on higher player count servers?

  • xkingxnitemare

was the server upgrades just for pc or were they for console too?

    • Hot-Wire

Im on ps4 and all servers went down for maintanence this morning, so maybe for consoles as well.

      • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

        Yep! It was for errbody!

  • SillyCrez

OMG ! I noticed earlier that most of the BF4 servers running Conquest Large (on PS4) were capped to 44 players. I guessed, ok maybe they did it on purpose so at least the game works nicely until they found/fix the problem (<– LOL)

    BUT

I just saw right now, in the BF4 menu this message:
"We are adressing an issue where some servers allow only 44 instead of 64 players in the conquest game mode"

    …—…

      broken already, surprise

  • Oblivion_Lost667

I find it funny that they’re just now saying they are “unhappy with server performance”. So it was working fine and as intended when the servers cause unavoidable deaths (The ones that happen when you die when you’re back in cover.) and terrible hit registry because of the terrible tickrate. (Which is what, 30? CS:S had had 66 and 100, and was released in 2004, that’s more than double and is 10 years old.)

    • swipe_06

I was thinking about this for a while now, and there’s no point “in theory” going beyond 30 or so. The FAMAS has a firing rate of 1000RPM or 16.6 per seconds (i’m just off from work, I hope I’m correct here). If we simplify this to 15, then every odd net package would contain a bullet.
I think the issue comes from somewhere else cause BF3 was just fine considering how much it had to sync over network.

      • Oblivion_Lost667

I disagree with BF3 being just fine, it still had cover/desync issues, just not to the degree that BF4 does, though it certainly had better hit reg.

    • Leon Roy Mills

bf4 tick rate is actualy 10 :0 and in regards to that comment by swipe, i think its more about the location of player model and also sync with the hit boxes which is the issue, ( on your screen you killed me fair, on my screen im behind cover and reloaded then die from 100 health to 0 in on frame :) if bf4 had 100 tickrate everyones location would be reasonably true thus proving the point that bf4 needs some drastic changes to make it to at least a simple first person shooter:)

      • Oblivion_Lost667

BF4′s system seems rather strange, there are moments when you stop shooting and people die on your side, you see them duck behind cover, and then they die, it essentially seems there are moments you are perfectly in sync with how the server’s interpeting what’s going on, which shows how out of sync it is.

I played 2 rounds and I think its promising. This game is almost ready for release. I just wonder how the “It works fine for me” crowd will react. First time since launch I actually look forward to play tomorrow.

    • VEX_VEHIX

Lol @ “This game is almost ready for release.”

  • Scavenger of Human Sorrow

I don’t want to be mean or anything, because I’ve put up with all this BF4 nonsense (considering I spent like €115 in total on the game + premium).

But at this stage? I’d rather tell DICE to fuck off with their lame excuses. I’m sick of it at this stage. I spent hard earned money on their product, and it hardly works – months down the line.

I’ve been a big Battlefield fan since Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, but seriously, it’s getting to the point now that I wouldn’t even think about buying another DICE game at launch or a few months in because of how ridiculous this game has been.

  • Orlando Jamar

I’m still rubber banding on ps4

    • Ramp Lion

depending on what server you connected to you will always rubber band. EX if you live in USA and connected to Asia servers. Try connecting to a server closer to where you live

If they don’t fix these fucking servers in about 2 seconds IM GOING TO EAT A TACO!

  • M16seal

Yesterday I play 6 round in CQ on PS4 , I notice the following :
    1- Still little rubber-banding .
    2- Still lag
    3- I fall under the map in Zavod311 exactly in C point ( This happened 3 times & I quit servers )
4- In Zavod311 on the rooftop over D point , my screen shacking as water wave , this first time I countered like this .
5-When I was engage enemy my weapon stop firing then after second later I die …

As much as EA pisses me off, it looks like I am going to have to check this out.

The game wasn’t ready at launch. The game still wasn’t ready the last time I bought Premium and the map packs, which was ridiculous. I was thrown off that game not because I could get used to the way it was but because I couldn’t play due to the lagger and stutter which drags your character back around 1 meter every second.

I think Iv’e wasted £80 on what I thought was going to be the next level of gaming. Looks like I’ll have to log back on and check it out. If there aren’t improvements, there will be another forum post lol.

Search for “Testserver” in the server browser in-game. I’ve had good luck with these (from PS4) having very little lag or rubber-banding, even during levolutions. Even with me being in USA East and the Testserver being in EU there hasn’t been a noticeable problem. Of course, some the the glitches we’re still used to continue to exist, but personally I’d rather see DICE focusing on the lag/rubber-banding/netcode issue to bring the overall experience up to where it should be and only THEN focus on fixing the various glitches (like people still getting up in the Metro ceiling).

As for changing the tickrate, sorry, but none of you coded either Frostbite 3, the BF4 server code, or the BF4 client code. You have absolutely NO CLUE what you’re talking about, so honestly we’re all tired of of you blathering on about it. Comparing tickrates of other games is a totally worthless exercise unless you’re fully clued in to every detail of the overall interaction between all the elements of code. So STFU.

  • thebulky1cometh

As a guy who just switched to BF4 from COD ghosts, this is excellent news. Also, how refreshing to see a company ADMITTING that there are server problems and then making an attempt to fix them.

  • Emre

    And for console versions?

  • Luis Concepcion

I could play carrier assault the last night almost time without rubber banding problem, but sometime I felt a little bit lag when the bomb inside the carrier exploited. I think that the game has improved…

  • mwalker

    Nothing has been fixed

  • Ramp Lion

To everyone who is still has lag: connect to servers that are near where you live. If that doesn’t work, someone who has burger king internet is in your lobby and they are holding back the ping.

    • Orlando Jamar

Wow I can get a whopper and whop ppl with my lag at bk :)

The server performance fix has arrived. 64 Player modes are fine. Every other game mode with less than 64 players is still as unplayable as before….
