Halo 5: Guardians Will Extend Dedicated Server Support To Custom Games

Now, you’ll be able to beat up your friends without connection issues or pesky host advantages.

343 Industries Executive Producer Josh Holmes confirmed yesterday that Halo 5: Guardians will not only utilize dedicated servers for Online Matchmaking, but also Custom Games.

“We only have dedicated servers for MP in Halo 5: Guardians,” he wrote on the TeamBeyond Forums. “That’s true for matchmaking AND customs. There is no P2P.”

Previous Halo titles, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection, have always relied on a peer-to-peer connection for Custom Games. For those who notice these sorts of things, the set up can lead to some discrepancies between the host of the match and the rest of the players, as connections rely heavily on the host’s connection strength. On paper, dedicated servers should ensure a smooth and fair experience for all players.

While Holmes stated “There is no P2P” in Halo 5, it’s not clear what sort of set up co-operative play might employ.

Yesterday, a mysterious Halo 5: Guardians teaser site was spotted with a countdown leading to Sunday night, which is presumably when fans might learn something new about the game.
