Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Director Says Their Next Game Might Involve “Drastic Decisions” That People Might Not Like
One of the biggest success stories this generation is undoubtedly RPG hit, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the debut game from Sandfall Interactive.
While the studio has already confirmed that we’ll see more games in the franchise, it seems that what the developer has planned isn’t just a straight-up sequel.
On the contrary, based on what was recently said by the studio’s boss, we might be in for something different than what we’re expecting.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Director Didn’t Develop the Game to Please Anyone
In a video interview, Sandfall Interactive CEO and Creative Director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Guillaume Broche, mentioned they didn’t develop the RPG to please anyone, and added that some people might not like their next game, given they’re making some “drastic decisions.”
Not only that, but the developer also commented on the pressures of wanting to expand the studio, high expectations and more.
Broche mentioned (via YouTube translate), “We spent five years where, I think, overall, the dev team was just so happy to be working together. It went really well. And doing that again in our little den in Montpellier—that’s what we love. And that’s what people love, too, so why change?”
He added, “I think there’s a bit of that pressure we can put on ourselves if, psychologically, we start veering off in one direction or another—telling ourselves: we’re going to go bigger, we’re going to expand the studio because expectations are higher, so we’ll just keep growing.”
Broche also mentioned how they’re going to stick to making games that they love, and not really concerned whether their follow-up project isn’t as popular.
“And then we end up with games that, personally, I don’t play because I don’t like them. So we’re going to stick to making games that we love. If people like them, great,” Broche said, and added, “If it doesn’t, oh well. Do you already know that the next game won’t be as popular? I have no idea. I don’t really care.”
“It’s weird to say, but we didn’t make the first game to please anyone. And I think that’s why it worked. So for the next game, we’ll make some drastic decisions too, and maybe people won’t like it. That’s life. Whether people follow us or not is their decision,” Broche answered.
All in all, Broche doesn’t want the studio to be crushed under the pressure of gamers for their next project, but also admitted that if it sells zero copies (low sales), that they’ll have problems.
While Sandfall hasn’t announced what their next game is, most people — including me — assume it’ll be a follow-up to Expedition 33. We haven’t heard anything about it, but I think I can confidently predict that it won’t sell “zero” copies.
Whatever Sandfall’s next project is, you can bet a lot of people will be keeping a close eye on it, and that includes us.
Speaking of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the developers recently released a new game update that added more devs in the credits and more.
