GTA 6 Will Require Age Verification in Australia
GTA 6 is still coming this year to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, on November 19. Players can already pre-order it in “physical” format, with a box and download code, or in digital form, including the Standard and Ultimate editions.
Rockstar Games’ new title is expected to be a huge release for the industry. However, not everyone in the world will be able to play it in the same way.
Like earlier games in the series, GTA 6 will not be released in Tajikistan, and Australian players will have to prove their age before playing.
Australians Will Need Age Verification to Play GTA 6
It is common for games with extreme violence to face restrictions in Australia. For example, Manhunt 2, a stealth game released by Rockstar Games in 2007, was banned in the country. Now, Rockstar is facing another restriction. It is not as serious as a ban, but it is still a significant change.
According to Australian outlet News, playing GTA 6 in Australia will require age verification. This means users will have to prove they are 18 or older, blocking access for minors.
It is not clear if this rule will only affect the online mode or if it will also apply to the story mode. The measure follows Australia’s new online safety rules, which were applied last March.
The age check is simple: Australian players will need to prove they are over 18 by showing an ID card or another valid document, such as a driving license. This does not mean GTA VI requires a driving license to play in Australia. It is only one of the valid documents that can be used to complete the age check.
Another thing worth mentioning is that If someone bypasses the safety system, the government could fine Rockstar Games up to 49.5 million dollars.
In related news, analysts are saying GTA 6 just made $80 the new standard for AAA games.
