God of War Laufey Releases Feb. 16, 2027; Next Kratos-Led Game Coming After It
Revealed two months ago, God of War Laufey is the latest game in the franchise, though one with a new protagonist. If you’re excited to play another entry in the series, you’ll be glad to know we don’t have to wait long to experience it.
Sony has announced that God of War Laufey will be released on PS5 on February 16, 2027!
Not only did we get that info today, but confirmation of the next game after it too.
God of War Featuring Kratos Comes After Laufey and Connects the Two Games
At San Diego Comic Con (via IGN), Cory Barlog, studio head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, announced that the next Kratos-led God of War game is coming after Laufey, and connects directly to her story.
No further details were shared, so we don’t know the release date/window, which pantheon the game will be set at, etc. That said, given we saw Kratos make an appearance in God of War Laufey’s reveal gameplay trailer, this is hardly surprising.
For those not caught up to the latest God of War game on the way, Sony explains Laufey’s storyline as:
“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk.
To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.
Harness Faye’s speed, control and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision.”
Laufey isn’t really shown in God of War (2018), but she is a “Guardian of the Jötnar, rebel leader against the oppressive Aesir gods, and lone protector of the Wildwoods – Laufey is a warrior whose battle prowess was legendary even among the Giants.”
Expect Laufey to expand the God of War universe, and give the character a proper story since all we saw was her dead at the start of Kratos’ Norse journey.
With God of War Laufey releasing early next year, a God of War Greek mythology remake, and confirmation of a new Kratos-led God of War title coming after Laufey, franchise fans be eating good!
That said, given Laufey is releasing next year, don’t expect a disc-based version of Kratos’ upcoming adventure, since Sony is ceasing physical disc versions of new games at the start of January 2028. Unless Santa Monica Studio releases two God of War games in a year, which we’re willing to bet money on that it won’t happen.
