BioWare Shuts Down; Next Mass Effect Development Canned
For those looking forward to the next Mass Effect game and eagerly awaiting every crumb BioWare throws our way (which is me!), we have some very bad news for you.
Publisher Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare, along with early development on the next Mass Effect.
This is very sad news for the industry as BioWare was one of the titans of the RPG genre.
BioWare Is No More and Next Mass Effect Won’t See the Light of Day
Over on X (formerly Twitter), the official BioWare account made the announcement today. The studio wrote a heartfelt note to fans confirming that early development on the next Mass Effect game is ceasing.
The full note reads:
For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our worlds to life.
Baldur’s Gate. Neverwinter Nights. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Dragon Age. Mass Effect. Anthem.
Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.
There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition.
What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember. These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own.
From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story.
The last update we received from BioWare about the next Mass Effect was 12 months ago, when the studio confirmed it was still in development.
Is there a chance the IP shift to another studio? Maybe, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
The last title that the studio released was Dragon Age: Veilguard, which EA publicly acknowledged as a title that underperformed commercially and even resulted in job cuts.
If you haven’t played the Mass Effect trilogy, you’re missing out, as that’s one of the best video game RPG trilogies of all time.
We wish everyone affected at BioWare the best. And for me personally, thanks for the memories, BioWare!
