BioWare Assures Fans Next Mass Effect Still in Development; Hidden Cypher Decoded
BioWare has given us the latest development update on the next Mass Effect game as part of N7 Day (November 7, get it?). While the game has been confirmed to be in development since 2022, BioWare’s latest RPG release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, underperformed at retail, which might have raised questions from fans on whether publisher Electronic Arts is still looking to pursue another revival of a classic BioWare franchise.
The good news? BioWare itself confirmed that the next Mass Effect game is still very much in development. Although there’s no gameplay trailer or other information available, the studio has confirmed a few key details about it in its latest N7 blog post.
Next Mass Effect Game Won’t Retread Commander Shepard’s Story Confirmed
In the N7 blog post by BioWare, the studio quelled fears as it confirmed the game hasn’t been cancelled by EA. “Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe,” the note states.
For now, the studio is “heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect.” One thing players can be sure of is, the new Mass Effect game won’t be a repeat of Commander Shepard’s story from the original trilogy.
BioWare adds, “The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”
If you’re not familiar with the show, Amazon is working with BioWare and EA to craft a Mass Effect TV series, which I admit, I am very excited to see.

Here’s to hoping we get a trailer or something soon, given it’s been four years since we got anything meaty about the game. Perhaps we’ll see a release of the RPG in 2026? For the sake of RPG fans, I sure hope so.
I’m really hoping it won’t take another N7 Day before we hear more about the next Mass Effect, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens.
