Airship Syndicate Has No Plans for User-Generated Content in Wayfinder, But Would Love to Do It in the Future

wayfinder update 1.22

For those curious, Wayfinder will not support any user-generated content like in Warframe, but that doesn’t mean the studio is ruling it out entirely, as they plan on following Digital Extremes’ philosophy when it comes to listening and adding community-requested features and feedback.

As part of a live group Q&A session with Airship Syndicate, we asked the team whether Wayfinder would have a system similar to Warframe’s TENNOGEN for user-generated content.

Q: MP1st – Can we expect to see some player-created content of any kind? I know it’s a big thing in the Warframe community with the TennoGen system.

A: AJ Lasaracina (Director of Marketing) – It’s something we’d love to do in the future, but we don’t have any immediate plans for it. It’s it’s complicated in terms of just like how the art style is, as well as the randomization. But we are in talks about how we can bring the community in, as well as maybe some featured artists, we’d love to do that type of stuff in the future. But we don’t have anything immediately planned for any of that.

That’s a jumping-off point to mention that we are fully embracing the DE (Digital Extremes) games as a service idea, specifically around the community and building this game alongside the players. When we release in early access in May, it’s not just this barebones version of the game. It’s pretty system heavy. Like Steve (design director) was saying, we’re trying to figure out what that balance is and how you introduce it. But the idea is that we take that as the foundation and build off it. So we’re really using early access as, hey, this is the game as is, tell us what you want.

And we’ve already done that a lot directly with our really active Discord, talking about some things we’ve added, like Beta rewards, for example, because we’re planning for that, and hey we want this. There’s so much feedback that we’ve already gotten from select people who’ve played the game before betas, they’ve given tons of feedback, and everyone at the studio is open to that feedback. And we are truly building this alongside them, and that’s something that DE did with Warframe and has been really important to us in the relationship for when we first started working with them.

Some background (via Warframe Wiki) for those who aren’t familiar with Warframe’s TennoGen system

TennoGen is a collection of community-created content that are selected by Digital Extremes and subsequently implemented in the Market. These contents can only be purchased with bought Platinum on Consoles, and can only be purchased through the Steam client on PC. Revenue generated from the Market will then be split between Digital Extremes and the creator, with the creator getting 30% of cash revenue

Considering that Wayfinder is currently in its beta stages, with early access dropping this May, chances may be high that we’ll see a lot of the community feedback incorporated when the title launches. Whether we get a system similar to TennoGen may depend on if the community really wants it. In the very least, it’s good knowing that Airship Syndicate is thinking about it.
