The Xbox Developer Direct just revealed that Obsidian’s fantasy RPG Avowed release window is Fall 2024. During the Direct, the development team discussed the game’s fast-paced combat the consequential decision-making players will engage with during quests.

The team at Obsidian highlighted three main pillars of Avowed’s gameplay: combat, questing, and exploration. Each aspect of the gameplay experience has that unique Obsidian touch. They’ve clearly poured their hearts into this project, and it reflects in the gameplay we saw.
Avowed’s combat is designed to be quick and fluid. Players can dual wield melee weapons, firearms, and wands for magic casting. Each of these weapons can be combined with another, and the game also enables players to quickly swap between loadouts mid-combat to maximize their efficiency on the battlefield. We got to see some brief gameplay clips against a band of lizard-like warriors, and it looks pretty slick.
Questing is another major part of Avowed. Obsidian has always put a lot of effort into creating unique missions with significant consequences in their worlds. Avowed seems to be no different. We saw a brief example of a quest in which a small band of soldiers were slaughtered by wild animals. The sole survivor got out by running as the action started, and players will have the choice between reinforcing the character’s choice to run or criticizing him for leaving his allies behind. Either decision will have an impact that will be clearly visible upon returning to the team’s settlement.
Finally, the team gave us a brief overview of the environments we’ll encounter. There’s a wide variety of biomes, from rolling deserts to lush forests. The team emphasized their desire to create areas with stark contrast from each other to truly immerse players in the world and give them a strong sense of exploration. The world design is very intentional, and it shows.
Avowed doesn’t have an exact release date, but the segment ended with a confirmation that the game will launch in Fall 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. We’ll be sure to let our readers know as soon as we have an exact date.
