Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC Not Off the Table, Larian Explains How They’d Approach It

Baldur's Gate 3 Crossplay

For those that already conquered Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 and hoping for more content to chew through, while the game doesn’t really lend itself to feature an expansion (no spoilers, please), that doesn’t mean a form of Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC isn’t off the table.

Speaking in a video interview, Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Swen Vincke states that DLC for the hit cRPG isn’t “undoable,” but also touches on how it would likely feature new characters and such, and doesn’t necessarily need to be set at the end of the game.

Q: You talk about uh you know to spell magic also being a breaking thing, you know, levels 1 through 12, you and I both know after 12, things get pretty nuts in D&D. That’s when, like, the spells get just world shattering…hard to capture in a video game stuff, that is why we’re keeping it 1 to 12 for Baldur’s Gate. That also makes it hard to do DLC if you were ever temped.

A: Yeah, well, you could do different things then, so it doesn’t have to be necessarily at the end of the game, and so there’s different ways that you can do that. You could make a level 12 to 20 game. It’s a different game all right, the approach is completely different, so yeah. That would.. different stakes, different environments; most likely different protagonist, antagonists but not undoable. but a bit different.

You can watch the complete 47-minnute interview right here.

While nothing has been confirmed by Larian, this gives those looking for more BG3 content a glimmer of hope. Of course, given how big the game is, you can just start a new adventure and choose different paths and it’d technically be a new game onto itself.

In other BG3 news, the game just got a patch last week, which you can read about here.

In case you haven’t picked it up yet, go read our review where we state, “If you can only purchase a single game for a couple of years because budget is tight, Baldur’s Gate 3 should be the one. The amount of content and the sheer quality in display almost makes it feel like a steal, a game that grows on you and eats the hours away, invading your dreams and making you count the time until you return to it.”

It’s a good game, but it has lots of technical problems still and the story gets weaker as you go from Act 1 to 2 and even more so from Act 2 to 3. That and then there’s obvious cut content as far as even having quests that can’t be completed because the upper city, or whichever it was, isn’t in the game. At this point I’d rather they just make a new D&D game than DLC for this one. There are plenty of parts of the Forgotten Realms we’ve either never seen in videogames or haven’t in many decades like the Inner Sea. That and I’d sure love to see them tackle a Planescape or Spelljammer game.
