DICE: Battlefield 2042 Squad Management Feature Incoming, “Can’t Say” If Other Maps Are Getting Reworked

Just yesterday, DICE hosted a 50-minute “Inside Battlefield” podcast Q&A with the questions coming from the community. In it, DICE confirmed that Battlefield 2042 squad management is incoming, alongside talking about balancing specialists after the big 3.2 update and more.

Battlefield 2042 Squad Management Confirmation and More Details From Inside Battlefield Ep. 3:

  • Can you add Snownardo to breakaway, can you add more penguins?
    • Will never say never, but we haven’t planned anything like that.
  • What way will Angel’s crate work after 3.2 is out, will we still be able to switch form of restricted loadout?
    • You can walk up to the create, change your gadget, weapon and gear, but you cannot change your class.
  • Will specialists get further tweaks and changes to their abilities?
    • We will monitor and get players feedback and then change balancing based on this. We need more time to work out any changes needed.
    • There is some changes in the works to tweak some specialists to make them more grounded in the game. (They didn’t specify what this means)
    • We are checking Discord, Twitter, Reddit etc to monitor feedback, as-well as collecting data points in the game to find what changes need to be made.
    • We are looking at weapons related to specialists as-well such as the Javelin, we don’t know what the answer is yet, but we are monitoring and can formulate a plan soon.
  • If a specialist isn’t fitting inside the class they are in now, will you re-evaluate their class?
    • It won’t be done on a whim; a lot of work has been done to ensure they are in the correct class.
    • We will monitor everything same as the above and if there is any changes needed we will make them.
    • We are aware of feedback with Paik’s abilities as she has a close quarter ability, but she is in a recon class which is historically a range based classed, but we feel that recon can be a close quarters role too, but we will monitor and see how it goes.
      • Paik is a good CQC recon and if you like that, you will like whats in store for Season 4 😉
  • With the return to the class system, how do we tell a player he has a tool to fix my tank or helicopter?
    • We do a fairy good job tell players when someone needs to be revived but we’d like to look at the system for repairing vehicles as-well in the future. But there are no plans to improve it right now.
  • With only discarded and hourglass being the only two maps which need re-works will we see any reworks come to these maps?
    • We have to address each map in a separate way as the feedback for each map is different, so I can’t say we will rework them all in the same way as it depends what needs changing on them.
    • We are aware of pain points on all maps like lack of cover and 360 degree engagements, changes to add more cover may be coming in the future for all maps, such as containers, sandbags etc.
    • For example Hourglass we will need to look how to close the space down and which areas to keep and which areas to remove etc
      • Note: Even though they didn’t out right confirm these maps would be re-worked from the way they said it, these maps will likely see changes and other maps may get tweaks, but they don’t know the scale of this until they look into it more.
  • Will the tutorial ever be removed? I keep seeing it
    • This is a bug, its not intended.
  • The intro before you jump into the match is too long, can it be shortened or removed?
    • We are looking into it. It will be snappier in the future, will be coming in a patch in the future.
  • Will we ever get squad leader abilities? Squad management etc?
    • Yes, we are looking into it. We wanted to get the class system out before we looked at this. We know its important.
    • Cannot give a date yet, but it will come soon TM
  • Would you allow a game to start with bots after a few minutes of wait time, even if the demand of players is not met?
    • We are aware not all players have the same good experience when it comes to getting into a game. We are looking into it and planning to address it.
    • We are going to make multiple improvements to matchmaking experience in general, improvements to stuff such as you wont get the same map 3x in a row for example. This is a bug, you shouldn’t get the same map twice in a row.
  • Are you 100% removing helicopters from breakthrough forever? Will they come back?
    • We don’t have plans to change it.
    • Will let the players decide based on feedback.
  • Addressing all questions like “We will get future X or Y in the future?”
    • Squad management is coming.
    • Some old features from previous titles will return.
    • We don’t have an answer for anything else right now.
      • These things they take time. So cannot say much else right now.
      • We aren’t done with adding new features to the game.
      • We are looking towards Season 4 and the content it will have now.
  • Will the 2042 narrative continue in Season 5?
    • Yes but you’ll have to wait to hear more about it.
  • Will 128 breakthrough become a permanent mode?
    • No plans to bring it back.
    • our view is 128 player is fun but too chaotic.

No official word on when squad management will be available alongside the other stuff the studio is working on. But once we know more, we’ll let our readers know.
