While Battlefield Portal was first introduced in Battlefield 2042, community-created experiences didn’t really catch on, largely because most of them didn’t offer XP when people played in these user-created playlists.

That’s changing in Battlefield 6, as DICE aims to have traditional modes hosted by players and even non-traditional modes to contribute XP.

This means that even for player-hosted experiences, players will feel like they are being rewarded. But how does it work? Read on.

Battlefield Portal XP Gain in Battlefield 6 Explained

In a recent interview about Battlefield 6’s Portal mode on the Epic Games Store (yes, I’m not kidding), Design Director Aaron Steelman and Principal Game Designer Greg Black talked about Portal, and how they are rewarding players who test some of the zany and untraditional modes that will inevitably be created by the player base.

Just to clear things up, one of the biggest changes coming to Battlefield 6 is that players will earn XP no matter what they play, and this includes Portal creations, though there are certain caveats. Official modes and creations that are similar to Battlefield 6’s core gameplay loop, like 24/7 Rush or Hardcore Conquest, will grant the same amount of progression — just like if they were playing regular multiplayer modes.

Now, for creations that diverge from the traditional Battlefield modes and ruleset, such as “Top of the World” (a mode built by the devs where teams try to reach the map’s peak while slowing the opposing one down by utilizing their guns and equipment), will still reward XP, though not the traditional way, but depends on how much time is spent in them. This is the compromise DICE and Ripple Effect have come up with to ensure playing Portal is rewarding and that players won’t feel like they’re wasting their time that could be spent playing a mode that grants XP.

I’m all for this change. This means players can play regular Battlefield in order to gain full XP, but they can also fool around and try some of the wacky modes, without feeling like they’re wasting time. Sure, it probably won’t net you the same amount of XP as playing in regular modes, but it’s better than not seeing any XP at all. This also makes sure that it won’t be abused by the community since you know that will happen.

Speaking of BF Portal, check out the latest video highlighting the modes players can craft in it. Last month, it was also confirmed that persistent servers will be available, which means every player can host their own server that offers XP.

Battlefield 6 will be released on October 10 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and even if the game isn’t out yet, we have info about the game’s first season, which you’ll want to read.

Here come the wave of ‘zombie’ games that grant XP so quick they can boost a player to level 50 in 2 hours.
