Bethesda Wants Starfield to Live as Long as Skyrim, “We’re Always Working on Something,” Says Producer

Bethesda has always made it clear that they will support Starfield for many years to come, and it seems that almost a year after the debut of the sci-fi RPG, Bethesda has stuck to this commitment. The game’s launch didn’t meet the massive expectations set by other Bethesda titles like Skyrim, but Bethesda is still determined to support Starfield for the long term.

Speaking to TheGamer at gamescom 2024, Tim Lamb, Creative Producer at Bethesda, shared, “We want to continue to support the game for a long time. So we always have ideas going around in various levels of completeness, but we’re always working on something.” Bethesda hopes that ongoing support will keep players engaged, similar to how Skyrim has stayed relevant over a decade after its release.

To keep the game engaging, Bethesda is introducing new elements like the REV-8 vehicle and the Shattered Space expansion, set to release on September 30.

Lamb also hinted at more content in the pipeline, noting, “I don’t want to overpromise, but there are things coming.” This suggests that Bethesda is planning to roll out further updates and expansions, ensuring Starfield continues to engage its players.

Things haven’t been too bad for Bethesda either. According to SteamDB, the game hit a low point last April, reaching a peak of 8,713 concurrent users on Steam. While this isn’t terrible for a single-player game that’s been available for some time, it was still too low to justify extensive long-term support. However, thanks to continuous updates, more players started returning to the game. By August, the number of concurrent players on Steam increased to 15,908, indicating a positive trend.

Additionally, a recently registered trademark suggests Bethesda is working on a second expansion for Starfield, possibly called Starborn.

Be sure to check out our review of Starfield where we said, “The story is fantastic, but the role-playing aspect takes the spot.”

Skyrim, released in 2011, continues to be supported by Bethesda even today, with updates and patches that keep the game fresh for its dedicated fan base. Remarkably, Bethesda released a new patch for Skyrim as recently as January, showcasing their commitment to long-term support.
