Bungie Gives Update on Marathon; Expanded Playtest Planned for 2025
Though Bungie isn’t quite ready to show us what they’ve been cooking with Marathon, the studio has issued a developer update to confirm that the project is still very much alive, with a few concept pieces shown off for some characters, and the confirmation of an expanded playtest planned for next year.
Marathon Developer Update Reveals the Game is Still Alive, But Little New Information
In the lengthy 9-minute video, Marathon’s new Game Director Joe Ziegler reiterates much of the known details that we’ve had on the game since its initial reveal, once again reaffirming that it’ll be a shooter based on the extraction shooter genre. He goes on to discuss the general game loops, confirming an expanded playtest slated for 2025 and revealing two Runner archetypes, Thiief and Stealth.
Despite the video’s length, it adds little new information to what we already knew about the title.
Though I do suppose the news that Marathon is still alive is great for those who may have been interested in seeing Bungie’s take on the extraction shooter genre. Earlier this year, Bungie had faced layoffs, and soon shortly after, Marathon’s original game director, Chris Barrett was fired due to inappropriate behavior that several women accused him of. Just last month, we saw the news that many employees had begun transitioning to Sony Interactive Entertainment, leaving many concerned for Bungie’s future.
