It’s been almost 10 years since Star Wars Battlefront 2 was released on consoles and PC, but could we be getting another entry in the franchise in the future?

The latest from the rumor mill points to that, and it could be from a familiar studio too, which could mean good news for some, bad news for those who want someone new to take the reins.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 Development Might Be on the Horizon Soon

The latest rumor comes from Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who’s been accurate with leaks before. In the latest episode of the Game Mess Mornings, Grubb commented, “According to what we, your intrepid rumormonger, has dug up, the suits at Lucasfilm have been aggressively deploying probe droids for a development partner to take on the task of creating a follow-up. So far, no one has fully stepped up, but yours truly is hearing two major game studios are circling the project like a couple of snowspeeders led by completely unsurprising EA DICE, who we can hope learned from their loot box lesson. Duh. We can expect that one.”

It’s not just DICE in the running, as Grubb adds Destiny and Marathon developer Bungie is on the mix too! “The Cummat hears that if the Force is not entrusted to DICE, it could land at none other than Halo, Destiny, and Marathon developer Bungie,” Grubb adds.

Based on what he’s heard, Battlefront 3 is not in the works yet, but it does sound like there are conversations at the very least about it, and which studio should develop it.

Again, we want to reiterate that this is a rumor, so don’t treat this as EA has officially announced Star Wars Battlefront 3, OK?! For now, this is a tasty rumor that we’re hoping turns into something more soon.

Released on November 17, 2017, Star Wars Battlefront 2 was developed by DICE, and its announcement and release were marred by a big microtransaction controversy that saw publisher Electronic Arts do a complete 180 on it after tremendous backlash. The blowback reportedly got so bad that Disney was unhappy with how long EA took action about it, and even threatened the exclusivity deal EA had with Disney back then.

But once the microtransaction stuff was out the window, players were left with an amazing multiplayer experience from the wizards at DICE, who delivered on their promise. Even today, Battlefront 2 has a small but dedicated player base that still blasts each other in multiplayer.

In related Star Wars news, Lucasfilm is said to be “exploring” Star Wars games that will “surprise” fans.
