While the Call of Duty franchise is one of the longest-running and biggest brands in the world, some might not know that its inception is credited to two people: Jason West and Vince Zampella — the former founders of Infinity Ward, who released the first Call of Duty game in 2003.

While Jason West resigned as co-founder of Respawn Entertainment and has since moved out of the public eye, Vince Zampella not only took Respawn to new heights, but even moved up the corporate ladder at publisher Electronic Arts. Unfortunately, about 10 months ago, Zampella tragically perished in a fatal car crash.

Zampella’s legacy lives on in Respawn and in the Call of Duty franchise, and the developers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 certainly haven’t forgotten about him or the other developers instrumental to the franchise’s success who have passed away as well.

Modern Warfare Pays Credit to Fallen Comrades

If you finish Modern Warfare 4’s campaign, players will see Infinity Ward pay tribute to a few of their peers who are no longer with us.

Aside from Zampella, the other names included are: Reiner Yang, Matt Canale, and Preetam Raj Bordoloi. While they might not be as famous as Zampella, these are people still instrumental to the franchise’s success.

Once players finish the game, the credits start, and gamers will see “In Memoriam” starting with Yang, Canale, Bordoloi and  Zampella.

Bordoloi is credited to have worked on at least 10 Call of Duty games, with the last one being Black Ops 7. Meanwhile, Canale came on board Infinity Ward back in 2013 with Call of Duty: Ghosts, and last worked on Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile for Infinity Ward. Unfortunately, info on Yang’s involvement with the franchise isn’t readily available, but the gesture is there from Infinity Ward.

Zampella’s last role at EA was not only the CEO of Respawn Entertainment, but also as head of the Battlefield franchise, and EA Executive VP/Group GM overseeing non-sports at EA studios. If there was an exec you wanted to oversee your game to ensure it was a success, it would be Zampella. In one of our features leading up to Battlefield 6’s launch, we highlighted how Zampella has never released a bad game under his watch.

The acknowledgment of Infinity Ward to fallen friends is a nice touch and is made even more special given that the Modern Warfare storyline is getting wrapped up in Modern Warfare 4.
