Earlier this week CD Projekt RED surprised everyone by dropping what seemed to be our first look at The Witcher 4 gameplay. While the studio gave an odd statement that made it clear that what we saw was The Witcher 4 but not the game itself, it’s hard to deny how impressive the demo was.
What made the demo even more impressive is that it was done using a base PS5, not a souped-up PC. CD Projekt RED confirmed that it was on a base PS5 that was plugged into a monitor without any added horsepower
The studio is aware of how much they have achieved with the tech demo, and even mentioned how “no one’ could have guessed that was possible on a base PS5.

Speaking to DBLTAP, CD Projekt RED Engineering Director Przemysław Czatrowski was asked whether there was anything int the tech demo he’d like to highlight.
Czatrowski responded with, “There are a couple of highlights. Personally, being in tech for quite a few years now, the entire demo is very heartwarming, because it shows how powerful the implementation and optimization can be. Because we were showing it on a base PS5, with hardware ray tracing and 60 FPS, and still achieve this visual fidelity – I think no one could guess that this is possible at this point in time. So for me, the entire demo is a gem to watch over and over again.”
I have to admit, when I saw the trailer, the first thing I thought of was that it was running on a monster PC. The fact that they managed to make it look like that on a base PS5 is insane. Although the actual gameplay may not appear this smooth, it’s still a sight to behold. Can you imagine how the game would look like on a PC with the best rig?
The Witcher 4 has no release date, but it is confirmed to be in development for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
