CDPR Wants Cyberpunk Franchise to Evolve Like The Witcher

Cyberpunk 2077 was CD Projekt Red’s first new IP since The Witcher, and while they’ve gotten a lot right with it, there was also a lot they got wrong too. This is something that was acknowledged by the studio, stating that they’d like to see the franchise go down a similar route of The Witcher, evolving with each iteration.

In an interview with PC Gamer, narrative director Igor Sarzyński said this about their first entry into Cyberpunk and where they go from there.

“Cyberpunk 2077 was our first venture into a futuristic-sci-fi world with a ton of new gameplay mechanics, narrative tone, themes, and art direction,” said Sarzyński. “Some of the stuff worked almost right out of the box, such as the art, city design, music, interactive scene system, playstyles. Other aspects took more time to get right, like character progression, NPC interactivity, and optimization. That’s natural; it’s impossible to nail everything on your first try. Now with all the game elements iterated and working well, we’ll focus on connecting them even tighter and creating a coherent, total immersion experience.”

He compares it to the Witcher series, noting that each iteration brought change, something they’d like to see happen with the Cyberpunk franchise.

Judging from how CDPR handled Phantom Liberty, they’re on track to achieving that goal. I had nothing but high praise for Phantom Liberty in our review, dubbing it as the game I always wanted out of the original Cyberpunk 2077 and being one of the best gaming experiences to be had this year. Hopefully, they’ll be able to keep up that momentum, and I cannot wait to see where they take the franchise.

What are your thoughts on this? Where would you like to see the Cyberpunk franchise go?
