Cities: Skylines 2 Performance Improvements Planned for Post-Launch

Paradox Interactive has announced plans to improve Cities: Skylines 2 performance on PC post-launch in a new forum post. This follows the team’s recent raising of the game’s minimum system requirements.

The game currently has a “Mixed” rating on its Steam page, with many reviews citing the game’s abysmal performance as the reason for their negative feedback. In response to this backlash, Paradox has taken to the Paradox Forum site to share details on their plans to fix these issues.

Cities: Skylines 2 Performance Improvement Plans:

Paradox is currently working on the following adjustments:

  • Remove stutters, generally caused by some synchronization condition in the simulation. They can vary greatly from one CPU to another, as well as how your city is built.
  • Optimize and balance GPU performances by reducing the number of vertices processed per frame and optimizing/balancing the effects that affect fillrate (mainly Depth of Field, Global Illumination, and Volumetrics), which you can turn off or reduce in the settings for the time being to get a decent FPS.
  • Pushing any CPU optimizations that are not already done that we come across in this process.

Additionally, the team is also working on implementing upscaling techniques like FSR2 and DLSS2, as the currently implemented FSR1 is fairly crude and looks pretty terrible at lower scale ratios. These features are not compatible with the current build, so the team is making adjustments to get them working.

The team also plans to build optimizations to target a 30fps framerate, as a slow-paced city builder like Cities: Skylines 2 suffers “no real benefit” from higher framerates. That being said, they will continue to work on optimizations beyond achieving the 30fps benchmark, just to ensure the game runs as smoothly as possible.

Hopefully the game’s performance improves soon. We’ll be sure to let our readers know as patches for the game release.

Cities: Skylines 2 is available now on PC. PS5 and Xbox Series versions are planned for a future release.
