Dead Space Remake Devs Rebuilt USG Ishimura From Scratch to Make Most of Modern Hardware

Dead Space Remake USG Ishimura

With Motive Studio’s Dead Space remake slowly approaching, the developer is beginning to reveal details regarding what’s new to the third-person horror sci-fi RPG. In a blog post on EA’s website, Motive showcases one of the franchise’s most iconic elements — the USG Ishimura. Known as the planet-cracking mining ship that started it all, it was the setting of the first Dead Space game. In 2023, players will be able to traverse its halls once more in vivid (and horrifying) detail.

To fully make use of the game’s updated graphics, Dead Space will also feature an upgraded version of the zero-G mechanic. The developers hope that this will allow and encourage players to explore areas that were once inaccessible in the original game. Dead Space Associate Art Director, Roy Tuazon, had this to say:

“…in our version, you’re able to take the gondola to one end, activate zero-G, and then come back without the gondola. Now you’re able to explore this new area that, previously, when you looked down all you saw was this dark, creepy room.”

To keep the ship up to modern video game standards, the USG Ishimura had to be rebuilt from the ground up, introducing many new details while keeping many old ones you may recognize. Iconic areas such as the Crew Deck are also being updated, with the goal of amping up the horror factor even further.

“So how do you manage to make an already terrifying setting feel even more immersive…and thus even more terrifying? First, of course, you need to rebuild the entire ship from scratch, with new, more detailed assets that make the most of modern hardware.”

Through these new graphical changes, players old and new can hope to explore the abandoned mining spaceship like never before.

Dead Space will be released on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC this January 27, 2023.
