Report: Destiny 3 Not in Active Development as Layoffs at Bungie Are Expected
With yesterday’s news that Destiny 2 is getting its last live-service content drop next month, some might have assumed that the studio was channeling its focus on Destiny 3.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but a new report has surfaced that Destiny 3 is not even in active development at the studio.
To make matters worse, a significant number of jobs are expected to be affected by this major transition.
Bungie’s Not Developing Destiny 3, But Ideas Are Being Pitched
In a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it mentions how Sony is planning a “significant number of layoffs” as it ends development on Destiny 2. The info comes from someone familiar with the studio’s plans, though wishes to remain anonymous for obvious reasons.
Apparently, Bungie has no new projects lined up for Destiny 2’s development team after the game comes to an end next month. Bungie doesn’t plan to enter production for Destiny 3 immediately, either, so this will contribute to the job cuts.
Bungie’s staff are looking to pitch and begin development of new projects, including those set in the Destiny franchise. None have been greenlit so far, and there are no guarantees that any will be approved. Add in the fact that Bungie is one of the most expensive studios to operate, given the cost of paying developers in Seattle.
The studio is also said to be investing more in Marathon, even though its sales fell short of expectations. Some staff members from the Destiny team have shifted to Marathon in recent months.
While Sony hasn’t mentioned this officially, it does come from someone as reliable as Schreier, who has a very good track record when it comes to insider info.
We’re wishing that whomever is affected by the layoffs get to land on their feet ASAP.
For those hoping for Destiny 3, it seems that won’t be a thing anytime soon.
