DOOM 4: Two Gameplay Clips From the Cancelled Game are Now Public

NoClip has released a new episode of their Video Game Documentaries web series. As part of their game history preservation mission, they have recently revealed actual gameplay footage from an unreleased id Software game, which would have been known as DOOM 4.

The video shows off two gameplay clips from Doom 4. The first clip focuses on one particular combat encounter against an emp while the player uses a shotgun. The second clip shows off the melee combat system that would have been in the game.

The episode also shows off a clip from the development of the release DOOM 2016 game. However, several assets in what is shown in the clip did not end up in the final game. The reason behind this is that those particular assets were pulled over from the canceled DOOM4 and have aided in the development of DOOM 2016 and the combat system of the game.

According to previous statements made by Creative Director Hugo Martin, DOOM 4 was canceled simply because both id Software and ZeniMax agreed that the game did not feel like a DOOM game and they favored scrapping the game in order to try again and start over from scratch. This ultimately resulted in the creation of DOOM 2016 which essentially rebooted the franchise.
