EA Plans Annual Release Schedule of Racing Games via Codemasters Acquisition

In December of last year, word got out that EA managed to sneak in and acquire Codemasters before Take-Two Interactive managed to. During today’s quarterly earnings report, EA has shed more light on its acquisition.

EA has distributed slides pertaining to the Codemasters acquisition and what it means for the publisher. To possibly no one’s surprise, it means more racing games. How much is “more” you might ask? Try annual releases.

  • Grows EA’s presence in racing, creating a global leader in racing entertainment
  • Brings talented game teams, technology and IP to EA
  • Will enable EA to release new racing experiences annually
  • Natural fit and clear opportunities with EA Sports portfolio
  • Expected to grow net bookings and underlying profitability

Bear in mind that aside from the Codemasters studio and name, EA has also managed to secure the franchises under the studio (such as Dirt, F1, etc). Note that Codemasters has released a racing game every year ever since 2012, so this shouldn’t really be a different situation to the studio. EA also has Ghost Games who develops the publisher’s Need for Speed franchise as well.

Do you think Codemasters’ titles will dip in quality due to EA or will it remain the same? Let us know your thoughts below. Stay tuned for more reports via EA’s quarterly earnings later today.
