During today’s Nintendo Direct event, Nintendo confirmed a remake of the fourth installment in the Fatal Frame series is underway. This will be the first time that Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is coming to the West, as the original released on the Wii back in 2008 and was limited to Japan only.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse follows Ruka Minazuki, an amnesiac who disappeared during her childhood, as she returns to a sanatorium on the fictional Rougetsu Island after a cryptic vision hoping to recover her memories.

The game features supernatural enemies and a unique combat system that is focused around a “Camera Obscura.” Players can fight off spirits and ghosts by taking pictures of them using the Camera Obscura, and can expend in-game currency to upgrade the Camera. Different kinds of camera shots deal different amounts of damage; the most amount of damage players can deal is through taking the shot exactly when the enemy strikes.

Koei Tecmo’s Fatal Frame franchise, titled Zero in Japan and Project Zero in Europe and Australia, is a hugely successful Japanese survival horror franchise with multiple installments and even a live-action feature film.

The latest installment, a remastered version of 2014’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, was released in 2021 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It received generally positive response from fans and critics.
