Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC Now Highest Concurrent Single-Player FF Game on Steam, Even as Thousands Pirate It
[summaraize]
While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth just launched on PC, it seems to have already established a new record and is already faring better than its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade.
Over on Steam, the game has already established itself as the single-player Final Fantasy game with the highest concurrent players, and this is with thousands of people pirating the game.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Marks New Record for Square Enix
Over on SteamDB, it shows Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC has reached a concurrent player high of over 40,000 players today, which is the highest for any single-player game on Steam. For reference, the two Final Fantasy games with the highest concurrent player counts on Steam are Final Fantasy XIV Online (over 95,000), and Final Fantasy XV (over 29,000).
In terms of single-player Final Fantasy games, the first part of the trilogy only managed an all-time concurrent player peak on Steam of just 13,000, while Final Fantasy 16, which was released last year, reached an all-time high of 27,000 on the digital platform.
While 40,000 might not be as big of a number compared to most games, bear in mind that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC is also available on other PC storefronts, and those playing the game offline. Say, someone downloaded the game on Steam Deck, and then played it without a net connection after completing the download, that won’t show up on concurrent player numbers. Given Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a purely single-player game with no online component, I suspect a lot of RPG fans are playing it offline.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Is Getting Heavily Pirated by File Sharing Sites
Another thing that doesn’t help the game’s concurrent player count — and Square Enix’s revenue — is how the game has been heavily pirated since launch. While we won’t name any platform or sites, there are tens of thousands of people sharing the game illegally. We don’t know the exact number or ratio between people who purchased it legally and software pirates, but based o the numbers we’ve seen, it’s surely harming Square Enix’s bottomline.
Released last year on the PS5, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an excellent follow-up and outdoes the first part of the remake in every way. Our review of it was very glowing, stating, “The expanded story is riveting from start to finish, serving as essentially the Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. Even the smallest of sidequest can add something to the lore of the world or the overall narrative that you wouldn’t expect as well, which makes you want to complete everything the game has to offer.”
We here at MP1st do not condone piracy, and we hope this doesn’t deter Square Enix from pushing for more single-player games on the platform.
