FragPunk’s Social Media Account Pokes Fun at Another Game’s Demise, Instantly Regrets It
[summaraize]
It’s a very turbulent time in the games industry right now, with game companies closing and games shutting down left and right. It’s clearly not a joke, given that people are losing their jobs.
Unfortunately, someone at NetEase or developer Bad Guitar Games seems to think that it’s OK to make fun of the situation when it happened to one game recently.
FragPunk’s X/Twitter Account Thinks a Meme Is a Good Response to a Studio Shutting Down
This past week, Mountaintop Studios, the studio behind the shooter Spectre Divide, announced that the game is shutting down, with the studio closing its doors too.
In a letter to Spectre Divide fans on Twitter/X, the studio said:
Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat. We were optimistic about the first week. We’ve had ~400,000 players play, with a peak concurrent player count of ~10,000 across all platforms. But as time has gone on, we haven’t seen enough active players and incoming revenue to cover the day- to-day costs of Spectre and the studio.”
Since the PC launch, we stretched our remaining capital as far as we could, but at this point, we’re out of funding to support the game. This means Mountaintop will be closing its doors at the end of this week.
We expect to take Spectre offline within the next 30 days, but we plan on disabling new purchases and refunding money spent since Season 1 launch via the platforms. We’ll be following up with more information on this soon.
Mountaintop added that they “pursued every avenue to keep going, including finding a publisher, additional investment, and/or an acquisition. In the end, we weren’t able to make it work. The industry is in a tough spot right now.”
There’s more to the message, but you get the gist. It’s essentially a goodbye note by the studio as its game is shutting down, which means developers will be losing their jobs
Well, someone handling FragPunk’s Twitter/X account thought it was a good idea to reply to that message with a meme. While the message was deleted, twe have a screenshot of it available below.
Pretty insensitive, right? Thankfully, someone at the studio noticed it and took it down, while also acknowledging they messed up, stating, “Today we made a comment in response to the closure of Mountaintop Studios that was insenstive and unprofessional. The content does not reflect our studio’s values or respect for fellow industry peers. We want to offer a sincere apology to everyone at @itsmountaintop and have taken steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
We here at MP1st dug what we played of Spectre Divide’s Flashpoint season in our hands-on preview. The thing is, nowadays, there are so many games to play and there’s only a limited number of players who are willing to give each game a chance. In the end, Spectre Divide joins the ranks of live service games that failed to catch an audience that led to its shutdown. It’s not necessarily due to the game’s quality that this is happening.
Here’s to hoping the folks at Mountaintop Games find work as soon as possible.

Insensitive? Why care? It doesn’t even look funny. What’s it supposed to even mean? “I can mess up without shutting down?” Even then, it’s just simply not funny.
I have never and will never care about people losing their jobs because a game shut down. I care about a game shutting down because I want to play the game. F*** your job. I couldn’t care less.
You’re a selfish piece of s***
lol Yeah I’m sure you care about all the random people that lose their jobs at restaurans, grocery stores, and other shops or whatever. You only care about what you’re told to care about and when. stfu
