GoldenEye 007 Online Multiplayer Limited to Nintendo Switch Port, Xbox Version

goldeneye 007 online multiplayer

Fans of the classic James Bond first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 will be disappointed to know that the remaster of the game announced for Xbox consoles does not include online multiplayer. The online multiplayer is instead limited to the port coming to the Nintendo Switch.

During the Nintendo Direct today, developer Rare, a first-party studio of Microsoft, announced that they will be porting the original title from the Nintendo 64 to the Nintendo Switch. The game will be part of the Nintendo 64 expansion pack for the Nintendo Switch Online service. At the same time, Microsoft also confirmed that a remaster of the original title will be heading to Xbox consoles as part of the Xbox Game Pass service.

Unfortunately, Danjaq, the owner of the James Bond franchise, has revealed that online multiplayer will be limited to the Nintendo Switch port. While the Xbox remaster will feature split-screen local multiplayer, players will not be able to access online play:

Exclusive to the new Switch version of the 1997 title will be online play, allowing 007 fans across the world to take part in the popular four person multiplayer mode together.

Xbox gamers can perhaps take comfort in the fact that they will get to enjoy a remastered, more accessible version of the beloved game, but this is disappointing news regardless. Microsoft’s remaster of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox consoles features improved control options, native 4K support, achievements, and smoother framerates, while the Switch port appears to be fundamentally identical to the original release.

The Switch port and the Xbox remaster both have no definite release date. For more information about the remaster,

GoldenEye 007 was released for the Nintendo 64 by Rare in 1997. The game was a critical and commercial success, and by the time Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002, it had sold over eight million copies. Cherished by millions of gamers worldwide, the game was previously remade in 2010 by Eurocom to a mixed-to-positive response.
