Hideo Kojima Puts Project on Hold Due to Similarities With “The Boys” Show

It would seem that legendary video game director of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima was at one point gearing up to take on some superheroes as it’s been revealed that he had a concept, which was similar to Amazon’s The Boys TV show and was set to possibly star Mads Mikkelsen.

Taking to Twitter, Hideo Kojima opened up a bit about this project, comparing it to The Boys.

“THE BOYS,” which I quit after 3 episodes of season 1. I thought I’d watch the rest of the show. Actually, I watched a few episodes that were delivered at the time when I was about to start a project that I had been warming up for a long time, and put it on hold because the concept was similar (different settings and tricks). A buddy (male/female) thing with a special detective squad facing off against legendary heroes behind the scenes. I was thinking of Mads as the lead.

Sadly, as he stated, this project was put on “hold” and stayed within his mind, never actually seeing anything drawn up in terms of any kind of production.

Today, when superheroes continue to be mass-produced in the entertainment industry, this drama was to be a radical hard-boiled action film, neither hero nor villain, with an astonishingly black joke setup and a worldview that is the opposite of what we are used to. Well, what I had planned stayed in my mind only, so I didn’t incur any cost for labor, material, research, or anything like that.

While he does use the term “film,” suggesting that this probably wasn’t going to be a game, it certainly could have been a cool idea to follow up on for a video game. Heck, even the showrunner, Eric Kripke, is down for Kojima to make a video game based on the series.

Maybe we’ll see this idea come to life sometimes down the road, but for now, we know that Kojima is currently working on an Xbox exclusive set to make use of Microsoft’s cloud technology. Hopefully it won’t be much longer before we hear more about that title.
