How to Set Up Valve Index VR for AMD RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT

How to Set Up SteamVR for AMD RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT

AMD’s RX 7000 series cards are finally here, and while they’re proving to have some impressive benchmarks for the price they’re being offered, it seems that the cards are having a bit of trouble running games over on Valve Index VR, with reports of users struggling to get any signal. And while AMD has yet to acknowledge the issues, many have pointed out that the driver most likely isn’t ready for VR, at least not yet. Luckily, some have already found a solution to getting the AMD RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT to work with Valve Index VR.

How to Set Up Valve Index VR for AMD RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT:

The solution to making sure both the 7900 XTX and 7900 XT work with Valve Index VR comes after hours of trial and error from the VR Reddit community. One user outlined their findings and setup to get Valve Index VR working, but they warned that this is “experimental.” While it does offer smooth performance on both cards, it is without its faults. Because of that, it may be wise to hold out until AMD or Steam issues driver updates to resolve the issue.

Summarizing their findings, this is what was said by the Reddit member:

  • Set Valve Index’ refresh rate set from 144Hz to 122Hz. If this doesn’t fix it right away, you may need to reinstall Valve Index and perform a system restart.
  • The user used the VRLink port on the GPU, with a USB C to DisplayPort 1.4 Adapter (non-affiliate link).
  • To help with stuttering, they recommended minimizing the VR preview window and playing games in windowed mode.
  • Turn freesync off on your main PC monitor. Per the user’s own experience, this helped drastically with stuttering, to the point that it even offered a better experience in Skyrim VR than Nvidia’s RTX 3900 card.

Again, this is experimental and serves more as a band-aid to a real solution. We highly recommend you wait for AMD to issue an official driver update, though how long that wait will be is anyone’s guess.

We’ll be sure to keep tabs on upcoming driver updates, and should this issue be fixed, we’ll be sure to let you know.
