Latest Returnal Update Being Rolled Back, Players Need to Redownload the Game Due to Issues

Returnal Upcoming Update 1.4.0

Earlier today, Housemarque released a new patch that should have solved some of the game-related issues the game has faced since launch. Unfortunately, it didn’t exactly the opoosite, as our report pointed out new error codes popping up for players. It seems things have taken a turn for the worse, as Housemarque has announced that they are removing the latest Returnal update in order to fix the save corruption issue that surface with today’s latest Returnal update.

Taking to Twitter, Housemarque issued the following statement to affected users.

Patch 1.3.3 has been pulled and we are reverting back to 1.3.1 until it’s fixed.

We are fixing the issue now and a new patch will be published in a few hours

All users affected by the 1.3.3 need to re-download the game.

Our sincerest apologies.

It’s not clear whether the fixed patch would be the same revision as the one they pushed out, but they did warn users that are on update 1.3.3 that they would need to redownload the game again in order to fix the issue. A bit of a bummer, but it’s a better option than losing all your progress.

For those unaware, the latest Returnal update introduced a nasty save corruption bug, with users reporting error code CE-100028-1. Upon boot, the error code message screen would flash on the player’s screen, and despite still be able to play, no progress could be saved. A full reboot would then see the player’s save wiped completely, with progress starting completely new, meaning all permanent unlocks such as key items and collectibles would be lost.

Housemarque states that the new update will be available later today, though of course that may change if the bug turns out to be harder to fix than anticipated. We will be sure to keep you all posted once the update has been re-issued.
