League of Legends Dev Update: New Emerald Ranked Tier, Lee Sin & Teemo Visual Reworks Slated for 2024, Clash Changes, and More

Riot Games has released a new League of Legends developer update video, featuring Riot Brightmoon, Meddler, and 100 pc nuggets discussing updates to Ranked, Clash, the state of the Lee Sin and Teemo Art and Sustainability Updates (ASUs – visual reworks), and more. A new Emerald tier will be added between Platinum and Diamond to flatten the rank curve, and promos will be removed. Read on for a summary of all the changes and announcements below.

League of Legends Dev Update – June 2023:

Ranked:

Given that most League players who engage in Ranked play fall between the Bronze and Silver tiers even though many in Silver are above average in skill, Riot will be reworking ranked distributions in Season 13 Split 2 in the summer to achieve a more even percentage split across tiers, centered at Gold. To prevent corresponding inflation in the Diamond tier, an Emerald tier is being introduced between Platinum and Diamond that will represent a roughly similar proportion of players as Platinum currently does.

Additionally in Split 2, a partial Ranked reset will see players placed into higher ranks than typical Ranked resets would. Placement games will be shortened from 10 games to five, and this change will be carried over into the next season. The Promotion Series will now be removed, meaning that players will be able to progress directly through tiers as soon as they have accumulated enough LP.

Clash:

The frequency of Clash tournaments will be reduced to roughly one tournament a month (with two clash days per tournament) from the previous biweekly schedule, with the total number of Clash tournaments this year now standing at 14 weekends down from 20 in 2022.

Clash Capsule and Orb rewards will now be given out on the basis of a team’s total wins throughout a given tournament, as opposed to its final placement. A comparison of the old and new reward systems is as follows:

Lee Sin and Teemo Visual Reworks:

The ASUs for Lee Sin and Teemo are now slated for release in 2024, with Lee Sin’s ASU coming out in the first half of the year while Teemo’s will release in the second half. The long development period has been attributed to the sheer number of unique skins both Champions have. For more information on the ASUs, check out the official blog post from the ASU team that details their vision and goals with both updates.
