Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Venom’s Design Approved by Character’s Co-Creator

Todd McFarlane, co-creator of the character Venom from the Marvel comics, seems to like Insomniac Games’ rendition of the symbiote. McFarlane shared his thoughts on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Venom and how he looked in the latest trailer.

You can find the interview below for reference.

McFarlane commented on Venom’s look in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, such as his size. “I intentionally made him bigger than an average superhero,” McFarlane commented. “If you now put an average person, he’s at least 20, 30, 40, 50% bigger than an average person, even Iron Man, then I go, ‘Yes, for me, that’s a giant point.'”

McFarlane also commented on Venom’s teeth, saying that he liked its more natural, uneven design. “I like it when the teeth aren’t all lined up and they look like these are like monster teeth,” he stated. “Because animal teeth, they don’t go to dentists, so they don’t straighten out their teeth. I actually like that they made a big bold spider on him, way bolder than the one that I’d put on him.”

When asked about Venom’s tongue, McFarlane revealed that the design was done by Erik Larsen, another designer for Venom, and not him. “I give credit to the tongue to Erik Larsen, he was the guy that followed me,” McFarlane admitted, “Honestly, I’m not much of a tongue guy.” While he didn’t have a very strong opinion on whether he liked Venom’s tongue or not, he did say that combined with the jagged teeth, Venom looked very “vicious” in the trailer and that he didn’t come “to play nice.”

As a final interesting tidbit, McFarlane also revealed that he originally designed Venom without knowledge of Eddie Brock, but the design ended up staying around anyway. Here’s the full quote:

When I created [Venom], the black costume existed, so I just went, ‘Oh, [it] comes from some alien planet, so I’m just gonna make this big hulking gorilla guy and he’s gonna look like an alien with claws and teeth and all his weird stuff. And then later the writer says, ‘Oh, it’s gonna be Eddie Brock.’ Information I coulda used earlier, right? But then they had approved the design and I go ‘I don’t wanna change it.’ If they can do Bruce Banner to Hulk, why can’t they do Eddie Brock to Venom? So it was like, ‘Let’s just keep it, and somehow he just gets swallowed up in it and whatever else’ and we were able to do it, but I think they did a nice job on making him feel like a monster. To me, I’m a big monster fan, so…

The video ended with McFarlane giving the design his own seal of approval, saying that he’d rather play as Venom over “that skinny Peter Parker dude.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings out this October 20 exclusively on the PS5.

They did an amazing job with the design artwork for Venom, the amount of detail is very impressive.
