“Metro 2039” Announced as Artwork Leaks Ahead of Official Reveal
Not counting Metro Awakening, which was a virtual reality (VR) experience and a spinoff of the franchise, the last mainline Metro game was Metro Exodus released in 2019 for consoles and PC.
Those looking for more of the franchise, you’re in luck, as publisher Deep Silver has officially announced “Metro 2039,” and its full reveal will take place later this week on April 16.
Not only that, but our first look at the game has surfaced, thanks to an artwork that leaked.
Metro 2039 Reveal Set for April 16, But Artwork Leaks Ahead of Time
The announcement comes from the official Metro X (formerly Twitter) account, which confirmed hte title and as Metro 2039, which will have its global reveal on April 16 at 10 am PDT/7 pm CEST/1 pm EST/1 am HKT.
In addition to that, artwork for Metro 2039 has apparently leaked, and it features what we presume to be the protagonist (via SanicNotSonic):
Per Reddit user QuietProfile417, it mentions how the image gives off a lot more info than it seems, stating, “Observations: The image on the left is clearly the ruins of the Dark Ones’ hive from Metro: Last Light (you can even see Ostankino tower in the background). There’s also some kind of humanoid figure in the central character’s head that looks like a Dark One (both of these elements indicating that the Dark Ones are going to be involved). Interestingly, the building on the right side of the image has banners depicting what appears to be the German Iron Cross (this could have something to do with the Fourth Reich, maybe it’s a surface settlement like that one area in Metro 2033 before you get to Black Station). Also, the main character’s helmet has a warped “M” on the forehead area. This could be the logo of the Spartan Order, or it could just be a generic M for “Metro”. Even though the leaks say that Artyom is not the main character of the new game, there are signs pointing to this potentially being him in the photo. The main character’s eyes are gray, the same eye color as Artyom. Also, while the gun he’s carrying initially looks like a Tikhar rifle, the wiring and more electric-looking components may point to this being a railgun, potentially the same one that Artyom took from Miller near the end of Metro Exodus. While I don’t want to get anyone excited, this image could prove that Artyom could still play a major role in this game, or the leaks are straight up wrong and this is another adventure with our favorite silent Ranger from VDNKh. We’ll just have to wait and see on Thursday.”
Observations aside, we’ll know a lot more info later this week once Deep Silver shares our first official look at the game.
