NetEase Given Green Light by Marvel to Create Original Characters for Marvel Rivals, Devs Say “Stay Tuned”

by Alex Co August 18, 2025 11:46 am in News

While there’s no shortage of characters to draw from Marvel’s decades-long history, could we see an original character design at some point in Marvel Rivals’ future?

That seems like a real possibility, given NetEase’s recent statement to us about it at the recent Marvel Rivals Ignite tournament held in Guangzhou, China.

Could NetEase Be Developing Original Characters for Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals Update for July 3

Speaking to MP1st, we asked Marvel Rivals game director Guangguang that question, and his answer was quite interesting to say the least.

MP1st: One thing about Marvel projects lately is the introduction of original characters, be that in movies or shows. Is that something that you’re even allowed to do down the road just having a completely original character for the game that may be introduced to the full Marvel universe later?

Guangguang answered, “Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.”

When we followed that up and asked where there is anything in development about that at this time, the game director didn’t confirm or deny it, but only said to “stay tuned.”

While I honestly don’t see NetEase releasing an original character anytime soon, stranger things have happened. It’s just that they have such a rich catalog of characters to choose from that it’s surely hard to decide which character to release first, much less start one from scratch.

In the same interview, NetEase also confirmed to us that they are taking steps to prevent leaks from happening, although we’re left in the dark as to what those exact steps are.

Do you want to see original characters created by NetEase featured in Marvel Rivals? Or should NetEase keep its roster exclusive with Marvel characters? Leave a comment below and let us know.

The big hook for this game was Marvel characters, I’d be very disappointed if they release more OC’s especially considering how much blind love is given to that industry plant Luna.

Luna Snow is originally an original character from Marvel Future Fight, a mobile game.

People are over-reacting. If you’ve played many Marvel live service games they almost all get to do make a single OC and some of them have brought good ideas in. Captain Carter (who later featured heavily in What If) was an OC from Marvel Puzzle Quest originally. As long as they are only making a single one it’s fine, especially when they are releasing 12 characters a year if they keep this pace. But it’s the internet, go ahead and over react as always…

I’m surprised by the reactions TBH

Everyone is taking this as if they are going to do it nonstop.
But besides that, at one point, all the Marvel characters were “originals,” and there was a time when people got excited by the idea of a new hero being introduced.

There’s definitely an overreaction, but this should be good news in general. Just because they can, doesn’t mean they will, or at least do it a bunch. But it just goes to show how much freedom the team really has.

This better be one of those ‘countermeasures’ previously talked about to prevent leaks. Just flood the web with BS stories like original characters in this IP based game.

The ONLY way this is acceptable is if they are multiverse mashups like Spider-Man with Cap America’s shield. Or Deadpool with Thors hammer.

It’s cool to do so and a good idea. Not because it is marvel, they’re ate so many characters to choose from. But I have an idea of a character. (Magma) thought I was original until I found out marvel already had a magma. But my version has power from core and controls lava, smoke like volcano, even a small amount of electricity. Created him long ago too. But frl, id say just stick with marvel characters
