It’s a great year for fans of Capcom‘s legendary (pun intended) fighting game franchise: the company has now announced a new live-action Street Fighter movie that it is co-producing with Legendary Entertainment. Capcom promises that more details about the project will be revealed soon.

Check out the official announcement below:

Adaptations of fighting game franchises have generally not fared well: the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie did enjoy some level of success, but the 2009 Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li movie is often labelled one of the worst films of all time. However, given the unprecedented popularity of video game adaptations recently as in the case of The Last of Us HBO TV series, Capcom sees an opportunity to bring one of its most iconic franchises back to the big screen.

Film production Legendary Entertainment secured the film and TV rights to the Street Fighter franchise recently, and first in line for the partnership’s projects is a new live-action Street Fighter movie. No casting or filming details have yet been revealed, but it is quite likely that the project will have no continuity with any previous film, TV, or web-series adaptations of the franchise. However, keeping in mind that Capcom was able to bring in the likes of Jean-Claude van Damme and Kylie Minogue for the 1994 film, fans can expect that the cast for the new movie could very well include several Hollywood superstars.

While details about this new movie are scant, Street Fighter 6’s June 2 release date is fast approaching. Stay tuned here at MP1st for all upcoming Street Fighter news and announcements.
